If you are the owner of an iPhone or iPod touch and would like to download an app or two onto your device today, but don’t know which one, maybe we can help. We’ve picked out three of the most recent apps added to the iTunes App Store. They’re all free to download and install, as long as you have an iTunes account.

Sirius XM

Confirmed as downloaded over a million times, Sirius XM lets you listen to exclusive music with dedicated artist channels, live performances, and music covering every genre right on your device, anywhere you are. As a Sirius or XM subscriber, streaming to your iPhone and iPod touch is free with your Premium Sirius Internet Radio or Premium XM Radio Online subscription.

To start listening, simply type your Premium Online Username and Password into the application. Although the application is free to download and install on your device, Sirius XM does require a paid subscription.

Vlingo

Using innovative speech-recognition technology, Vlingo lets iPhone users dial their contacts, search the Web, look up numbers and maps for local listings, and send status updates for Facebook and Twitter – all with the power of voice, according to the developer with the same name. Users do not need to change how they speak, or to memorize a list of commands, as the application captures the results word for word. With more features to be added in the following months, Vlingo currently offers the following benefits:

- Initiate calls to anyone in one's address book.
- Search for anything through Yahoo! or Google.
- Look up and map local listings.
- Update one's Facebook and Twitter status updates without typing.

Travel Diary

Travel Diary works to your benefit, as it allows you to take a picture and immediately save it with details including location, the time it was taken and even comments. Instead of using the iPhone's camera application, simply fire up Travel Diary and take your pictures.

The app also allows you to browse through your pictures either from an interactive list or in full-screen mode. Since it uses your device’s camera, the app is not supported on the iPod touch.

Free Monitoring App Released for iPhone, iPod touch – Alarm.com

Alarm.com has announced the availability of a free application that enables iPhone and iPod touch users to perform home and business security monitoring right from the portable device. According to its makers, the Alarm.com app provides complete awareness of what’s happening at their properties in real time.

The provider of wireless and web-enabled security and monitoring technology reveals that its free iPhone app connects customers to their security systems from anywhere. Consumers can use the app to remotely arm and disarm their security system, watch real-time video footage and recorded video clips showing events that happened while they were away, and even see where there has recently been motion activity at their property. Alarm.com also includes the ability to provide real-time email and text message alerts to one's device whenever the security system detects an event.

“Our customers love that the iPhone or iPod touch in their pocket can also serve as a remote control to their business or home security system from anywhere in the world,” Alison Slavin, Alarm.com’s vice president of Product Management, said. “We’re excited to continue developing applications on the iPhone platform that further empower consumers to monitor what matters to them – whether it’s an aging or ailing family member, their household’s thermostat settings, or how much time the dog walker actually spent walking their dog.”

Why More Free iPhone Apps Are Now Available

Now, more than ever, the App Store includes demos of paid apps which folks can download and decide whether the program is worth the buy

Some developers learned the hard way that pricing an app too high, or just slapping a price onto an app that does almost nothing will not pave the way to success. In contrast, others learned coding the hard way, and the benefits of their strivings were enough and some to spare. Some of those successful iPhone developers are the ones who decided to offer up a free version of their app, thus maximizing their chances of having folks like it and eventually buy the full set of features.

We've just finished covering Ethan Nicholas' success story, and decided to check up on everyone's favorite iPhone app tracker (Apptism) to see exactly how many free apps are there in the App Store at the moment. Not surprisingly, there are currently well over 5,000 freeware programs to download onto an iPhone or iPod touch, according to the tracker. Most of them, though, are actually Free, or Lite versions of paid apps and games. But, as the developer of iShoot has proven, a Free / Lite version of an app can make all the difference in the world.

So, where did this Lite initiative stem come from? Well, developers have long complained about the rating / reviewing system in the App Store. Moreover, while new apps were making their way onto the venue, older applications receiving mere updates were climbing onto a much better position, for one reason or another, preventing the new titles from being displayed for a fair amount of time. Some devs went as far as giving their apps strange names, just so the alphabetical system would push their apps in line.

Microsoft Has a Free iPhone App in the App Store

Seadragon has been implemented as the "Deep Zoom" feature of Silverlight

Microsoft apparently has “deep” feelings towards the iPhone (or Apple), as the company behind the Windows OS has released a free iPhone app, and a cool one at that. Immediately available for download from the iTunes App Store, Seadragon Mobile lets iPhone and iPod touch users zoom in as deep as possible on high quality images with near zero transition times.

Microsoft's app makes it possible for users to “browse large quantities of high-resolution imagery smoothly and quickly with a flick or a pinch,” according to the iTunes App Store description. “Explore massive galaxies, pore over maps, or flip through collections of photographs, all over the air,” says the Windows maker.

You can also add your own photos, or browse some that are already available on the official Photosynth website. For example, you can grab a picture of Times Square at night and try to spot anyone who might have been picking their nose at the time the photo was taken.

The app's main features, as Microsoft points out, include the ability to view thousands of images over the air, view massive gigapixel pictures, explore Photosynth collections in 2D (including your own), add your own PhotoZoom / Deep Zoom Composer content, and even an RSS feed service.
