iPhone/iPad SDK Lifts Ban on 3G VoIP Support

iPhone users may be able to leverage VOIP 3G to cut their monthly bills

Apple began to ease its restrictions on VoIP apps last fall when it approved a Vonage app. In October AT&T and Apple said that they would eventually be opening 3G data traffic to voice-over IP calls (initially approved apps like the Vonage app were crippled to only work over Wi-Fi connections). AT&T, which cut its investment its capital costs (network investment) last year basically said its reasoning for banning the traffic for so long was not to try to control customers, but rather to protect its network from being overwhelmed.

Now, the new iPad/iPhone SDK, whose launch coincided with that of the new Apple tablet, has at last made good on this promise, reportedly opening up VoIP over 3G. The company that broke the news, iCall, now has an updated app available that works with 3G.

ICall CEO Arlo Gilbert cheered the news, stating, "I applaud Apple's decision to allow iCall to extend its functionality beyond Wi-Fi and onto the 3G networks. This heralds a new era for VoIP applications on mobile platforms, especially for iCall and our free calling model. I hope that now more developers will begin using our VoIP as a platform to integrate VoIP into their applications."

Free iPhone development tool GameSalad is close to launch

It might be argued that the last thing we need is more games on the App Store, but US tools company Gendai Games is about to make it even easier to develop iPhone games thanks to its GameSalad technology.

Launched a year ago, as a beta product, GameSalad is an open platform that enables non-programmers to create games for iPhone, the web, and social networks such as Facebook.

The application is available as a free download and combines the under-the-hood complex algorithms necessary for implementing artificial intelligence and gameplay with an easy-to-use interface that doesn't require any programming knowledge.

It also hooks into a development community so you can collaborate with other users, both in terms of game design and and implementation.

The formal release of GameSalad will finally enable you to sell your games on the App Store.

"We're at an extremely exciting point in our company's life," says Gendai Games' CEO, Michael Agustin.

"The number one feature that everyone has been clamouring for is an easy, more intuitive way to create a game for the iPhone. With GameSalad's visual-based logic system along with its drag-and-drop interface, we are poised to make that a reality."

You can download GameSalad from GameSalad.com.

Apple Announces Preview of iPhone OS 3.0, New SDK

Apple has big plans for the software on the iPhone

Apple announced this week that on March 17 it will offer a special preview of iPhone operating system 3.0 and the company's new iPhone software development kit (SDK), both of which will be released in coming months.  Apple has sent out invitations to news outlets to attend the exclusive event.

Last year, Apple held a similar event to announce the arrival of its iPhone OS 2.0 software and how it was opening its SDK up to more developers.  The top news last year was that Microsoft Exchange through licensing the Microsoft ActiveSync protocol was coming to the iPhone.  This year, anticipations are high that Apple will drop some more big news.

Apple blog site Apple Insider has published a "wish list" for the 3.0 version OS, though it’s pure hopeful speculation.

Apple is on a roll, growing its smart phone OS market share 111 percent from Q4 2007 to Q4 2008, according to market research firm Gartner.  The iPhone still trails Symbian and BlackBerry maker Research in Motion in total shipments, but continues to show some of the strongest sales figures for a single piece of phone hardware.
