Get a contract-free iPhone 3GS directly from Apple.com

It seems that there may be a pretty simple way to get an iPhone 3G S sans contract by way of Apple’s online store. I am not sure I would say this is a hack, or just a neat work around, but either way I have not tested it personally.

That said, this little trick also does not allow you to get any special or lower pricing. In other words you will still be paying the full rate for an iPhone 3G or iPhone 3G S.

Anyway, according to iTalkPhone you will need to use Firefox along with the Firebug plugin in order to do this. Assuming you have that taken care of, just follow the instructions listed below.

1. Go to any non-apple product in the store.apple.com (e.x: http://store.apple.com/us/product/TV943VC/A?fnode=MTY1NDA4Mg&mco=NjM0MTMwMw)
2. Click on the little FireBug icon on the bottom of the screen, now Firebug pops up and Click “Inspect”, and choose the “Add to cart Icon”
3. In firebug, right above where it’s highlighted, you should see “”. Click on “TV943VC/A” and change it to the value of the iPhone you want:

Of course, I am pretty sure that if you are willing to pay full price to not have a contract then you can also make the purchase in-person at Apple or AT&T. However if you are set on not having to go out in order to make a purchase, then this may be the best way.

AT&T in Discussion with Apple to Extend Deal to be Exclusive Carrier of iPhone?

The Wall Street Journal is reporting that Randall Stephenson, AT&T’s CEO, is in discussion with Apple to extend the lucrative deal to be the exclusive carrier of iPhone in US.

It's speculated that the current deal is expected to expire next year (2010) though reports back in 2007 had suggested that AT&T had cracked an exclusive deal for 5-years.

Wall Street Journal is reporting:

"But AT&T's exclusive deal to carry the iPhone in the U.S. expires next year, according to people familiar with the matter, and Mr. Stephenson is now in discussions with Apple Inc. to get an extension until 2011."

AT&T had added whopping 4.3 million iPhone subscribers in the second half of 2008; of which about 40% were new customers. So if the exclusive deal with Apple is indeed expected to expire next year then I'm not surprised that AT&T is looking to extend it further.

AT&T in Discussion with Apple to Extend Deal to be Exclusive Carrier of iPhone?

The Wall Street Journal is reporting that Randall Stephenson, AT&T’s CEO, is in discussion with Apple to extend the lucrative deal to be the exclusive carrier of iPhone in US.

It's speculated that the current deal is expected to expire next year (2010) though reports back in 2007 had suggested that AT&T had cracked an exclusive deal for 5-years.

Wall Street Journal is reporting:

"But AT&T's exclusive deal to carry the iPhone in the U.S. expires next year, according to people familiar with the matter, and Mr. Stephenson is now in discussions with Apple Inc. to get an extension until 2011."

AT&T had added whopping 4.3 million iPhone subscribers in the second half of 2008; of which about 40% were new customers. So if the exclusive deal with Apple is indeed expected to expire next year then I'm not surprised that AT&T is looking to extend it further.

Apple stores now selling contract-free iPhone 3G without a contract

Apple retail stores as of Thursday are selling unrestricted quantities of the iPhone 3G at the full, non-subsidized price of $599 for the 8GB version and $699 for the 16GB models.

The move follows AT&T's plans to sell one phone per customer at the full price for existing customers of its service. In Apple's case however, there is no limit on the number of phones a buyer can purchase, and no need to have an existing AT&T contract.

Activation can completed by the customer at home through iTunes.

While the phones are still technically locked to AT&T service, it is possible (but not supported) to unlock the phones for use with other mobile service providers. In the US, that is largely limited to T-Moble, although that GSM provider does not support the same 3G network the iPhone 3G needs to connect at faster than EDGE speeds.

Apple's change in sales policy comes as the company is working to sell off remaining inventory to prepare for the upcoming launch of the new 2009 iPhone, expected to be released around the middle of June, possibly at the company's similarly-timed Worldwide Developer Conference.

AT&T confirms contract-free iPhone 3G

After a nine-month wait, AT&T says that it will definitely offer iPhones without a contract, according to a spokesperson for the company. They're still locked to AT&T, but at least you won't have to commit to two years of AT&T punishment love-ins.

Earlier today, we told you about unconfirmed evidence that AT&T planned to offer iPhones without a contract. AT&T spokesperson Michael Coe has now confirmed in a statement to the AP that "no-commit" iPhones will go on sale next Thursday, March 26.

As rumored, the 8GB iPhone 3G will sell for $599 and the 16GB iPhone 3G will sell for $699. So now you know: AT&T is subsidizing $400 of the cost of the iPhone if you're willing to commit to two years of service.

AT&T said it would probably offer a contract-free option for the iPhone after the initial July launch frenzy settled down. That was nine months ago, for those of you keeping score. Further, the "no-commit" option is limited to one per customer per active line, and they are still locked to AT&T. Still, for those who don't want to be saddled with two years of service, you now have another option.
